  • 2nd GRADE - CURRICULUM 

    In Religion, students will:

    1. Apply the teachings of Jesus and the Catholic Church to daily life
    2. Develop an increased knowledge of the Catholic faith
    3. Participate actively in Mass
    4. Be exposed to different forms of worship, such as: Mass, Adoration, the Sacraments, Benediction, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, guided meditation, and spontaneous prayer
    5. Receive Reconciliation and Eucharist
    6. Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Act of Contrition, and Guardian Angel Prayer
    7. Build a knowledge and understanding of a variety of Scripture stories
     

    Students will achieve these goals using resources such as:

    1. The Bible
    2. The Rosary
    3. Be My Disciples textbook
    4. Formed.org
    5. Hands-on Mass kit
     

    In Reading and Phonics, students will:

    1. Apply short/long vowel patterns to spelling in written work
    2. Build awareness of and apply decoding strategies (e.g. identifying short/long vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, blends, digraphs, diphthongs, compound words, prefixes/suffixes, word families, pictures, and context clues)
    3. Read sight words
    4. Be exposed to and read different genres
    5. Apply comprehension skills, such as: identifying characters/setting/plot, making and confirming predictions, recognizing cause and effect relationships, making inferences and drawing conclusions, sequencing events, summarizing plots, comparing and contrasting, identifying the author’s purpose for writing, distinguishing between fact and opinion, using illustrations to interpret text, and identifying the main idea and supporting details of text
    6. Expand vocabulary and become familiar with multiple meaning words and non-literal expressions (e.g. idioms, similes, metaphors)
    7. Read with fluency and expression
    8. Self-monitor reading for comprehension
     

    In Writing and Grammar, students will:

    1. Write and speak using correct grammar
    2. Write in complete sentences
    3. Identify and apply the four types of sentences to daily work
    4. Recognize complete/incomplete sentences by identifying the naming (subject) and action (predicate) part of the sentences
    5. Identify parts of speech, such as: common/proper nouns, singular/plural nouns, pronouns, possessive nouns, action/linking verbs, and adjectives
    6. Use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and for proper nouns
    7. Use the correct punctuation at the end of a sentence
    8. Use a comma in a series
    9. Form contractions
    10. Identify synonyms, antonyms, and homophones
    11. Organize words alphabetically
    12. Become familiar and comfortable with using guide words to locate words in a dictionary 
      1. Apply dictionary skills to aid in proofreading written work
    13. Organize thoughts into a paragraph creating a main idea and supporting details
    14. Journal with and without story starters on fiction/nonfiction topics to build creativity
    15. Write formally using different genres, such as: personal narrative, friendly letters, how-to article, descriptive paragraph, book summaries, and research report
    16. Use a graphic organizer (e.g. word web) to organize thoughts
    17. Understand and apply the steps of the writing process: prewrite, draft, edit, and final draft
    18. Build public speaking skills by sharing written stories
     

    In Math, students will:

    1. Efficiently compute basic addition and subtraction facts (0-20) mentally
    2. Identify place value through the hundreds
    3. Add and subtract two and three digit numbers and regroup when needed
    4. Read and use the data from circle, bar, and pictographs
    5. Take a survey and use the data to create a bar graph
    6. Read an analog clock
    7. Apply strategies (e.g. drawing a picture, looking for keywords, etc.) and build confidence in solving word problems
    8. Identify and count money
     

    In Handwriting, students will:

    1. Print legibly
    2. Use spaces between words
    3. Learn how to write on notebook paper as opposed to control paper
    4. Learn how to form lowercase and capital letters in cursive
    5. Apply cursive to written work
     

    In Social Studies, students will:

    1. Define what a community is and name various ones (e.g. family, neighborhood, city, state, country)
    2. Read and make a timeline
    3. Compare and contrast the past, present and future
    4. Use the title, compass rose, and map key to read a map
    5. Recognize the world is made up of seven continents
    6. Name the continent, country, state, and city they live in 
      1. Locate their state on a map
    7. Identify and describe landforms and bodies of water
    8. Explain the cause and outcome of the American Revolution
    9. Identify the purpose of government
    10. Understand the role of producers and consumers
    11. Define the characteristics of a hero
    12. Grow in knowledge of various American holidays
    13. Grow in knowledge and acceptance of various cultures
     

    In Science, students will:

    1. Identify the needs of plants
    2. Understand how plants and animals depend on each other
    3. Analyze and classify different materials based on their observable properties
    4. Name and describe the different states of matter (e.g. solid, liquid, gas)
    5. Make and record observations (e.g. live animal webcams, habitats, temperature changes, etc.)
    6. Design and build models to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts
